The First Men In The Moon

Watched this the night it was broadcast. Mark Gatiss is always worth the price of admission, even more so when he's written the screenplay. This wonderful take on the novel by H.G Wells is slightly hampered by a tiny BBC4 budget, but it more than makes up for it in pure tongue in cheek entertainment.

Gatiss is wonderful as Dr Cavor, giving us a glimpse of what he may have done if he'd ever had the chance to play that other Doctor so loved of Sci-Fi fans. 

The DVD is out now, but no Blu-ray!! What's that about? It was broadcast on BBC HD as well as BBC4. Come on chaps, sort it out!

Snuff Box.

A short clip from the very underrated TV show "Snuff Box" that starred Matt Berry and Rich Fulcher.

It was, and is, genius. Shame nobody tuned in.

Don't watch this if bad language offends you. Because you WILL be offended. When I saw this sketch for the first time I didn't stop laughing for twenty minutes.

The Pool Of Fire. . .

A friend of mine said to me recently "You have a high tolerance for this stuff don't you!".

I was visiting his house and had stumbled upon some god awful Sci Fi show called "The Starlost"on the TV, it had been made sometime in the 1970's. By any reasonable standard it was total crap, however, it starred Kier Dullea and that was enough for me.
He was right though. I seem to be able to sit through the kind of TV that makes most people run for the hills.

So.... to "The Tripods"

It was a show made for the family teatime market in the mid 80's and, to be honest, it's rather shoddy. It's a great example of the BBC trying to film something for £2.50 that a Hollywood director would have trouble bringing to the screen for £80 million. So, 10/10 for effort.

I have a huge soft spot for it though. The acting may be atrocious and the script leaden, but it tries SO hard. The model work is some of the best the BBC ever produced, and the Tripods themselves look really cool. Fact.

It's a show that's developed a healthy cult status over the years. Not just the show but the music also. The soundtrack was written and performed by Ken Freeman and has been available on CD for some time. For many years though only season 1 of the TV show was available on VHS and DVD, but at last it's available as a DVD box set that contains both season's 1 and 2.

"But wasn't The Tripods based on a trilogy?" I hear you ask!

Yes. The third season was never made due to low audience figures, so the 3 of us that were watching it were left hanging.

"But wasn't it crap?"

Yes. But I love it. I have a high tolerance for this stuff remember.

You have to be a fully paid up child of the 70's and 80's to appreciate this. While I was watching it I started grinning like an idiot.

Cosmos

The last post got me thinking about "Cosmos", the great series that was first broadcast in the UK in around 1980. Carl Sagan is totally responsible for my interest in science, and over the years I have read many of his books.

Although much has changed in the years since it was made it still stands up incredibly well and is definitely worth viewing. I can't put into words the impact that this program had on me when I was 11, it opened up the Universe for me.

Carl Sagan was a one off. He took science and made it romantic and poetic. His language coupled with his clear love for what he did was infectious.

Enjoy episode 1! It comes with a short introduction from Carl's wife Ann Druyan.

Twin Peaks Season 2!!

Stumbled upon this a moment ago! AT LAST! It's been six years since the season 1 boxset came out, and most of that time was taken up with all sorts of legal wrangling over distribution rights, but it's here.

Sort of....

It seems to be available in the U.S, but not the U.K as yet. Come on guys! Time to make it available to those of us in England who like a good cup of coffee and a slice of cherry pie.

This was such a HUGE show when I was at college, and I have fond memories of my friends and I trying to work out what the significance was when a unicorn appeared in Laura Palmer's living room. Truly original telly. The Show took a slide halfway through season 2, but it's good to be able to see it from start to finish.

Shows like "The X Files" & "Lost" wouldn't be around today if it hadn't blazed the trail it did.

New Who!

Just finished watching the first episode of series 3. I have been watching this show since I was a kid and have always loved it no matter how "uncool" it became in the 80's.

Well that's not really true, during the Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy years my patience was severely tested. I stuck with it though.

The new episode was fun, but I'm beginning to tire of the histrionics of some of the new shows. Screaming, shouting, fast editing and all manner of noise. I know I sound like a grumpy parent but it seems to me that the show often hits 100mph from the first frame and then never lets up. This leaves little room for light and shade, with intimate character moments squeezed into the smallest possible spaces between shouting aliens and whizz-bang special effects.

That said, it's still the best bit of family entertainment on telly at the moment. Lets face it, what other family show on TV this Saturday night had vanishing hospitals, alien rhino police and blood sucking old ladies!
